Hello, fellow creatives!

Many of you have reached out asking for advice on how to deepen your skills and expand your creative expressions using Procreate, especially in the realms of digital illustration and pattern design. Today, I'm excited to share some invaluable resources that have personally helped me on my artistic journey.

Why Procreate?

Procreate has revolutionized the way I create digital illustrations and patterns. Whether you're sketching, painting, animating, or designing patterns, the versatility of Procreate allows for endless creativity.

Here are my top Recommendations:

Communities That Inspire with Tons of Procreate Gems and Guidance

For those of you who lean towards a modern style and love integrating Procreate with Affinity for pattern design, I highly recommend Liz Kohler-Brown's studio. I joined her studio at the very beginning (initially because of Procreate, but there's so much more to it!) and am now part of her team. And Liz continues to amaze me, DAILY. Does that give you a hint of how incredible INCREDIBLE she is? Check now her Procreate Foundation Free Mini-course

My second huge recommendation: If your style is more realistic and whimsical, if you're transitioning from traditional to digital media, or if you're exploring Procreate as a creative outlet and are looking for live drawing sessions to connect with other creatives, then the community led by Jennifer Nichols is where you should be.

I'm not just an active member of both communities; I'm a passionate advocate, having experienced significant growth through my interactions there.

Skillshare: A Goldmine for Learning

Additionally, there are several Skillshare classes I can suggest that cater specifically to enhancing your Procreate skills.

I encourage you to check out these communities and classes. Dive into the resources that resonate with you and your artistic style. Remember, every artist's journey is unique, but you don't have to walk it alone. And with more friends who share your passions, it's so much more fun!

P.S: when you become a Procreate brush collector, please don’t forget to check out my own skillshare class there! :-)

And it's in this very space that I've found an opportunity not just to grow but to help others on their journey of artistic and personal development.

I am ecstatic to announce ...

There's a common misconception that typography is a discipline reserved for those with impeccable handwriting and years of design experience. But who says it has to be so serious? My journey into font creation (with IFontMaker) began not in a designer's studio, but at the kitchen table with my son, doodling and capturing the evolution of his handwriting as he grew from one school year to the next.

Memories in Every Letter: The Evolution of a Typeface

Each year, we would create a new font—a digital time capsule of his developing script. It was a playful experiment that turned into a cherished ritual, allowing us to hold on to a piece of his childhood in a way that was both unique and timeless.

From Playful Beginnings to a Skillshare class

This experiment with my son sparked an idea. A close artist friend of mine, despite her beautiful handwriting, felt intimidated by the idea of creating her own font. It was then that I realized this process could be as easy and enjoyable as our end-of-year tradition. Thus, my Quick and Easy Font making on your ipad Skillshare class was born. It's a class that's not just about the mechanics of font creation, but also about embracing the quirks of your personal handwriting, no matter how "unpresentable" you might think it is.

Embracing the Imperfect: My Font, My Story

As a child, I faced my own handwriting hurdles—critiques not from teachers (well sometime also from them..), but mainly from my mom, who always had high standards when it came to penmanship. The once source of countless corrections is now a font of creative inspiration. My "imperfections" are now immortalized in a font that is uniquely mine, and through my Skillshare class, I encourage others to do the same.

The Skillshare Class: A Creative Redemption

In this Skillshare class, I guide you through creating your very own font using iFont (potentially in less than 5 minutes). Whether you want to preserve your child's handwriting, help a friend find confidence in their script, or finally turn the table on all those past reprimands about your own handwriting, this class is for you. It's not just about making fonts; it's about celebrating your individuality and turning what were once seen as obstacles into unexpected triumphs.

The Call to Action: Celebrate Your Handwriting!

So, how do you view your handwriting? Is it beautiful, average, or something you've always been a bit ashamed of? It doesn't matter. Celebrate it by turning it into a font! Experiment, play, and enjoy the process. Be warned, though—the joy of creating your own font can be addictive!

Conclusion: From Fossilized Frustrations to Digital Delights

Every piece of our handwriting tells a story, including the loops and strokes that were once the subject of criticism. I want to invite you to transform those stories into a digital reality. Are you ready to turn your "flaws" into art? Join me, and let's create a typeface that's as unique as your own journey.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this journey into the world of fonts and your own experiences with handwriting. Connect with me on Skillshare or on Instagram [@jamsolutions or use #maddamom] and share your story. For those eager to delve deeper into font creation, keep an eye on this page. Can't wait to hear from you!

Since I embarked on my Procreate journey in 2019, I've been under the impression that I had created a considerable number of pieces, but the actual volume took me by surprise. The pivotal moment came when I realized the pressing need for a comprehensive backup solution, a realization that was heavily influenced by the vibrant community led by Jennifer Nichols.

I owe a heartfelt thank you to Jennifer, Ali, and the legendary Gaby for being the catalysts in this endeavor.

The task of organizing my digital clutter was daunting, to say the least.

In a move somewhat inspired by Marie Kondo (or at least my interpretation of her methodology), I decided to confront (and thank) my creative chaos head-on. I started by documenting the process, recording a video of myself sifting through my endless Procreate gallery. It was a moment of reckoning, acknowledging the need to declutter and organize.

Admittedly, I'm far from reaching a point where I can discard my works liberally, but I've made significant strides in grouping and saving my creations. My new best friend in this journey is a Samsung S7 DDR 2TB hard drive, which has proven to be a reliable ally.

ipad air with pencil mockup
Play Button Icon

Initially, I attempted to use iCloud for my backup needs, but the endeavor was short-lived. The file sizes in Procreate, especially at this stage, are substantial, leading to almost immediate stagnation in my backup efforts. This experience led me to advocate for external backups, particularly with hard drives that offer direct USB-C connectivity. The convenience and reliability far surpassed my expectations.

On a brighter note, I didn't find myself needing to rename files individually (not sure if I have to thank for this my HD file system or some IOS/Procreate updates), and the super functional preview feature for Procreate files greatly influenced my decision to back up only the Procreate versions of my works (to win the war I have to start from a reasonable battle). My strategy is to export JPEG and PNG versions only for those pieces or patterns that I've uploaded or plan to upload to Print on Demand (POD) platforms.

Stay tuned for more updates on my digital organization journey! In the meanwhile I’ll group my gadget and book recommendations here.

Love and Creativity

This Valentine's Day

DIY ideas with the #3dPen and

#Productivity Book Recommendation

Happy Valentine's Day to all the lovers, friends, and dreamers out there! Today is a day filled with affection, chocolates, and, of course, heartfelt gifts. But this year, why not add a twist of creativity to your celebrations?

In the spirit of love and innovation, I'm excited to share that I've recently published a short tutorial on crafting unique DIY Valentine's Day gifts using a 3D pen, inspired by the art of Niki De Saint Phalle.

Whether you're a seasoned DIY enthusiast or new to the world of 3D art, this tutorial is designed to inspire and guide you through creating something truly special for your loved ones. You can find this tutorial on my YouTube channel and also on the dedicated 3D pen website (here the free templates to follow along)

But that's not all! As part of our geeky family tradition, I decided to blend the celebration of Valentine's Day with the Lunar New Year. Drawing inspiration from this year's zodiac animal, I crafted a 3D dragon for my husband, symbolizing strength, wisdom, and good fortune for the year ahead. And in a delightful twist, he surprised me with Ali Abdaal's latest book on productivity and goal-setting. It seems he knows me all too well, tapping into my ever-present quest for efficiency and growth.

I'll be sure to keep you updated on my thoughts about the book through my Instagram stories, so make sure to follow along for insights, reflections, and, undoubtedly, a few productivity hacks.

This Valentine's Day, let's remember that the most memorable gifts come from the heart—and sometimes, from the tip of a 3D pen. Whether you're crafting a token of love, setting ambitious goals, or simply spending time with those who matter most, today is a day to celebrate the myriad forms of love in our lives.

Wishing you all a day filled with love, creativity, and maybe a little bit of geeky fun!

Children Book recommendation

As we step into the vibrant Year of the Dragon, I'm thrilled to share something that combines my love for art, storytelling, and the magic of new beginnings. It's a time to ignite our imaginations, chase our dreams, and, most importantly, create unforgettable moments.

Unleashing Creativity with a New Drawing Tutorial

I'm excited to announce the release of my latest video tutorial, where we embark on a creative journey inspired by the enchanting world of children's books. This tutorial is not just about drawing; it's a celebration of creativity, inspired by the delightful "Princess Daisy and the Dragon" by Steven Lenton.

In this tutorial, we dive into the art of a cute dragon, guided by the style of this book that many of us hold dear. It's a nod to the tales that shaped our imaginations, wrapped in the excitement of the Year of the Dragon.

Why "Princess Daisy and the Dragon"?

Steven Lenton's "Princess Daisy and the Dragon" holds a special place in my heart. It's a modern, captivating tale that redefines the role of princesses. With intelligence, care, and courage, they make a difference in the most diverse situations—even in the life of a dragon! This book is a testament to the power of modern storytelling, where characters inspire us to be brave, kind, and creative.

Our discussions will orbit around three themes that resonate deeply with me:

  • What Inspires Us: We'll explore the muses that surround us, from the silent stories held within museum walls to the profound lessons nestled in the pages of books. We'll talk about the classes that challenge our perspectives and the beauty of our everyday surroundings.
  • The Life of an Illustrator and Surface Pattern Designer: The creative path is adorned with both highlights and shadows. Together, we'll navigate the ups and downs, sharing insights and experiences from the world of illustration and design.
  • STEAM Activities for Kids (And Our Inner Child): Creativity knows no age. We'll dive into fun and engaging STEAM activities that not only cater to the young ones but also awaken the curious and playful spirit within each of us.

These lives are meant to be a companion to your day, encouraging you to also walk, draw, or simply take a moment to engage with the world around you. Each day, I'll pose a question that mirrors our collective journey as creatives. I welcome you to share your answers, thoughts, or even your own creative expressions by tagging me @jamsolution or using the hashtag #maddamom. Your contributions are the heartbeat of this challenge, and I'm eager to share and celebrate your perspectives.

Hello, beautiful minds! As we navigate through the vibrant tapestry of life, each thread of experience weaves into the grand design of our creative and personal growth. Today, I'm thrilled to announce a challenge that's close to my heart, one that I hope will inspire you to join me in a journey of exploration, reflection, and shared experience.

For the next 21 days, starting from the crisp hours of early afternoon (around 1:30 to 2:00 PM, Central European Time), I'll be going live on Instagram for a brief, yet impactful 5-minute session. Yes, you heard it right - just 5 minutes! Hailing from Switzerland, I value precision, especially when it comes to time management, so you can expect me to be punctual.

During these live sessions, we'll embark on a walk together - a walk through ideas, inspirations, and introspections. You're invited to join me, not necessarily by watching, but by listening, as we delve into the realm of words and thoughts. Whether you're out for a stroll, sketching, or enjoying a coffee (especially my friends in the US, given the time difference), let's make this a unique rendezvous.

We all have that one moment in the day where our energy dips, and productivity seems like a distant dream. For me, it's the lull that comes after lunch. It's a challenge to admit, especially after the morning's peak productivity, but this temporal window often becomes a battleground for procrastination. My to-do list suffers, and the struggle to regain momentum is real.

In the spirit of turning obstacles into opportunities, I've decided to tackle this head-on. My challenge for these 21 days is to transform this low moment into a catalyst for growth. Here are the three habits I'm committing to:

  1. Embrace Vulnerability by Sharing on Socials: Yes, it might be slightly embarrassing at times, but what's growth without a few leaps outside our comfort zone?
  2. Step Outside: A healthy dose of fresh air and a change of scenery can do wonders for the mind and soul.
  3. Allocate Me-Time: After our live session, I plan to continue my walk, armed with my sketchbook, a podcast or an audiobook, and my camera. This time is sacred, dedicated to recharging and gathering inspiration for my next creations.

I'm curious to know about your low moment. How does it affect your day, and what strategies, if any, do you have to overcome it? Your insights and plans are invaluable, and I'd love for you to share them with our community.

Together, let's embark on this 21-day expedition, not just to challenge ourselves but to discover the boundless potential that lies within our collective creativity. Here's to sharing, growing, and transforming our low moments into springs of inspiration and action.

Stay creative, stay curious, and most importantly, stay connected.

EXTRA RESOURCES

As we gear up to transform our low moments into peaks of productivity and creativity, I'd like to leave you with two powerful reads that have profoundly shaped my approach to habits and productivity:

  1. "Atomic Habits" by James Clear: An essential guide for anyone looking to build good habits and break bad ones. Clear brilliantly simplifies the complex science of habits. He demonstrates how tiny changes can lead to remarkable results, emphasizing the power of compound growth. This book is a roadmap to making small adjustments in your daily routine that will lead you to achieve your biggest goals.
  2. "Eat That Frog!" by Brian Tracy: This book offers a concise and effective methodology for improving time management and productivity. Tracy's metaphor of 'eating your frog' - tackling your most significant, most daunting task first thing in the day - can revolutionize the way you work. It's about prioritizing your tasks and overcoming the urge to procrastinate, which aligns perfectly with our challenge to convert low moments into productive sessions.

Diving into these books can provide additional insights and strategies to complement our 21-day journey, empowering us to not only tackle our low moments but to redefine our relationship with time and creativity. Happy reading!

Let’s weave together the vibrant threads of design challenges and examine their impact on our craft and careers. Today, we delve into the Spoonflower challenge experience, a topic that touches many of us.

Do Design Challenges Really Lead to Increased Sales?

Design challenges, like those hosted by Spoonflower, spark a spectrum of opinions. Are they a mere creative exercise, or do they offer tangible rewards, such as increased sales or better search engine optimization (SEO)?

What’s your take? Have you noticed a surge in interest or sales after participating in such events?

A Spectrum of Experiences

Some creators find that these challenges act as a catalyst for sales, not through direct votes but through increased exposure. Featured designs can capture the attention of not just the Spoonflower team but also an audience eager for fresh patterns and prints.

Yet, not everyone sails the same boat. There are voices within the community that, despite the SEO benefits and exposure, see direct sales from challenges as a rarity. The true reward, they find, is in the journey—refining skills, playing with new ideas, and the thrill of unexpected successes or educational 'failures'.

The Motivation Behind Participation

If the promise of sales isn't always fulfilled, what compels us to throw our hats into the ring of these design challenges? Is it for the thrill of the competition, the camaraderie, or perhaps the possibility of being spotted by the Spoonflower team and their audience?

Engagement Over Sales

We might be chasing the wrong rabbit. Instead of solely chasing sales, isn't it the broader experience that counts? These challenges are a stage for engagement, to connect, share insights, and grow alongside fellow creators. They push us beyond our comfort zones, inviting us to explore new themes, and sometimes, to simply enjoy the creative process.

Your Own Creative Journey

Reflect on your path. What has participating in design challenges like Spoonflower’s taught you? Have they altered the way you approach your design work or the way you market yourself?

I’ve found that merely submitting a design isn’t the end. While I’m still building a workflow, I do believe there's so much more to do with your creations post-challenge. Sharing your entries, talking about them, leveraging them long after the voting ends can open new avenues.

A Creative Enigma

So, ponder this: In the grand design tapestry, are challenges merely threads that bind us in creativity rather than a direct path to sales?

Let’s start a conversation and weave our experiences together. Have you found that design challenges are a stepping stone to commercial success, or do they hold a different kind of value for you? What can you do now to learn from your current experiences with SF challenges?

Share your entries on instagram or join me in this collective board on Pinterest! and feel free to tag me! I’ll love to see them and support you.

Join me on Instagram as I discuss this topic further. Share your insights in the comments, and let's inspire each other on this colorful journey.

The Enchanting World of Children's Books: a Tribute to Tarari’ Tararera'

Children Book recommendation

Books possess a unique kind of magic. They transport us to different worlds, touch our hearts, and often stay with us long after we've turned the last page. Today, I want to share with you a gem in our library, a book that holds a special place in my life and heart - "Tarari' Tararera" by Emanuela Bussolati, published by Carthusia.

This book is not just any children's book. It's a journey, an experience, and a celebration of emotions, friendships, and the unspoken connections that books foster. Written in a delightful, invented language, "Tarari' Tararera" transcends linguistic and cultural barriers, uniting readers in a universal tapestry of feelings.

I've read and shared this book countless times, each reading bringing a new flavor - be it in Italian, Chinese, Danish, Colombian, Korean, Greek, Japanese, American accents, and many more. Each reading is a unique story in itself, proving that emotions and connections go beyond words.

We read this book daily when my son was a baby. The first time he, still a toddler, began reading "Tarari' Tararera" to his little friends, it was a moment of pure magic. We knew this book by heart, and nevertheless, each time offered a different nuance and memory.

This book has inspired countless art and craft sessions, even in our beloved New Haven library, and has become our go-to gift for welcoming new families. (As I write this, a new copy sits in front of me, ready to celebrate the arrival of a new baby in my husband's lab family).

Court Sports Design

3 Tips for Nailing this Spoonflower

Design Challenge

Hey creators and proud parents of sports enthusiasts!

Are you pumped to bring your A-game to the next Court Sports Design Spoonflower Challenge?

For my entry, I've crafted a piece that celebrates the dynamic spirit of women's basketball and I'm here to share three powerful tips I got while getting ready with this piece:

1. Embrace the Theme with Passion

My design, "Empowered Play," is a tribute to the energy and diversity of women's basketball. When you're brainstorming for the challenge, think about what ignites your passion.

Is there a sport, a cause, or a cultural phenomenon that fires you up? Channel that energy into your design. Remember, the most compelling artworks are those created with genuine enthusiasm and heart.

2. Consider Your Ideal Customer

For example, I’ve pictured a proud mom searching for that perfect piece to celebrate her daughter's love for basketball. My goal was to craft a design that would resonate with her - something that captures both the vigor of the sport and the magical, ever-changing world of a teen's room.

Who is your ideal customer?

Visualize them and let that vision guide your creative process.

3. Play with Color

For my palette, I chose the dreamy yet bold Peach Fuzz, complemented by contrasting tones that evoke both softness and strength. When selecting your colors, think about the mood you want to set. Colors have power - use them to tell a story, set a tone, and make your design pop.

Crafting Welcoming Walls

Your Guide to Spoonflower's Design Challenge

The entryway of a home is the first impression guests receive, a prelude to the style and warmth within. As artists, we have the unique opportunity to set this tone through the "Welcoming Walls Design Challenge" on Spoonflower. With current trends showing a delightful mix of nostalgia, nature, and contemporary design, let's explore how you can create an entryway wallpaper design that not only stands out but also stands the test of time.

Embrace the Trends with a Twist

Florals and Botany with a Story

From the timeless elegance of 1920s art deco to the serene touch of peaceful palms, botanical designs are a mainstay. Yet, the trending patterns aren't just plants; they tell a story. Your design should capture an essence, a feeling—perhaps the lushness of a tropical grove or the tranquility of a lotus pond. Think about the narrative your pattern weaves as visitors step through the door.

Geometric Shapes and Modern Abstracts

The modern home loves a chic, abstract pattern. Geometric shapes and tessellations offer a clean, crisp backdrop for any entryway. When designing, consider how your shapes interact, the flow of the pattern, and the use of space. Remember, simplicity often speaks volumes.

Vintage Vibes and Classic Elegance

There's a charm in the classic, and trends show a resurgence of vintage motifs like chinoiserie and art deco. These patterns carry a heritage, a whisper of the past. Incorporate these elements with a modern color palette or a twist in the composition to bring a fresh perspective to a historical aesthetic.

Natural and Landscapes

Wallpapers that feature landscapes or elements of nature can transform a space. Whether it's a stylized Italian cypress landscape or an abstract autumnal motif, these designs can offer a window to a different world. Consider the color stories of the seasons, the silhouettes of different landscapes, and how they can create an inviting path into the home.

Understanding the Audience

Spoonflower's audience appreciates designs that resonate on a personal level. Your artwork should not just be seen; it should be experienced. It should welcome, intrigue, and inspire those who see it. Think of the entryway as a prelude to a story and your design as the cover of a book that every guest wants to open.

Infusing Personal Style with Commercial Appeal

While it's essential to be aware of trends, the most successful designs often blend popularity with individuality. Your unique voice as an artist is your signature—infuse your design with elements that are unmistakably you. Perhaps it's a signature color scheme, a unique way of illustrating, or a pattern that has become a part of your brand.

Spoonflower's Latest Updates: Embracing Change with Optimism

Hello creative souls!

Recently, Spoonflower announced significant updates that are set to reshape our creative landscape. As a fellow artist, I understand the mix of excitement and uncertainty these changes bring. Today, I want to share my thoughts on three key updates: the New Digital Proofing System, Weekly Listing Limits, and De-listing Stagnant Designs, and why I believe they could be game-changers, especially for artists outside the US.

New Digital Proofing System: A Leap Forward

The introduction of the free digital proofing tool, effective December 31, 2023, is a standout change. No longer will we need to purchase physical proofs for our designs to be sale-ready. This is a big win! It reduces the time and costs associated with shipping and taxes - a significant advantage for international artists. While I cherish the tangible feel of physical samples, the digital tool offers a convenient and quick way to review our designs. It’s about striking the right balance between efficiency and quality.

Weekly Listing Limits: Finding the Right Balance

The new limit of 25 designs per week set by Spoonflower might seem like a lot at first glance. In my own experience, there are weeks when I upload just a couple of designs, and others when I've uploaded entire collections in a day. This limit, however, seems to be a well-thought-out number.

It encourages us to be more intentional in our creative output. Rather than rushing to upload a large collection at once, we can now spread out our uploads, ensuring each piece gets the attention it deserves. This not only helps in better planning and promotion but also keeps our work consistently in the spotlight.

Moreover, this limit is a strategic move to discourage automated uploads, promoting quality over quantity. It nudges us toward a more thoughtful creative process, ensuring each design is a reflection of our artistic vision.

De-listing Stagnant Designs: A Nudge for Continuous Improvement

The idea of our unsold designs being de-listed might stir some apprehension. However, I see this as an opportunity for growth and adaptation. It’s a reminder to keep evolving and to revisit designs that haven’t performed well. The de-listing criteria – based on age, sales, and favorites – is fair, and the ability to re-list gives us a chance to revitalize our older works. This approach encourages us to continuously improve and align our creations with the preferences of the Spoonflower audience.

The Crucial Role of Titles, Descriptions, and Tags

With these updates, the effectiveness of your titles, descriptions, and tags becomes even more crucial. They are the key to ensuring your designs stand out and reach the right audience. To help you master this aspect, I've created a Skillshare class titled "ChatGPT's Plugin for Artists: Boost Your POD Workflow with 3 Spoonflower Examples". This class will guide you through optimizing your listings for maximum visibility and appeal.

Wrapping Up

Change is always a bit daunting, but it also brings new opportunities. The latest updates from Spoonflower might require some adjustment, but I believe they hold great promise, especially in leveling the playing field for international artists. I encourage you all to approach these changes with an open mind and a creative spirit.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on these updates. How do you think they will impact your work on Spoonflower?

From Dreamer to Teacher: Celebrating a Year on the Rollercoaster of Art Teaching🎉

As a former LYA22 student, I am bubbling with excitement to share a monumental 1-year milestone with you: Last year, on this very last weekend of October, I mustered all my courage and published my first #Skillshare class. But that seemingly small step of clicking the publish button was indeed a giant leap, as it marked the beginning of my enriching journey as a teacher, both online and in-person here in Switzerland (teaching in German—a language not native to me!)

Publishing a Skillshare class has been a cherished dream and a goal I set for myself (and "publicly declared" with my husband🏄‍♀️ ) before diving into the LYA22 adventure. As a proud and somewhat stubborn to-do list enthusiast, I knew I'd "somehow" get it done once it made it to my list... but, oh, the support and commitment to LYA truly turbocharged this majestic goal into reality! 🚀

I'm sharing this journey as it began with a confronting dialogue with my imposter syndrome 👿 and wasn’t always smooth sailing. It was a roller coaster of emotions, filled with challenges and difficulties. Despite the myriad obstacles and the countless ups and downs, I'd relive this journey a thousand times over for the invaluable lessons learned about myself and the fulfilling yet unpredictable world of art/productivity teaching. 🎢

Now, let’s skim through the key takeaways this win, albeit punctuated with failures, brought along:

1) Embrace Failures! My first two classes saw a sparse turnout despite the colossal effort. I realized the timing issue with my Halloween art class, and the heartache of having just three students in my 3D pen class for three months was agonizing! (Seriously, not even my best friend spared 10 minutes to check it out!!!😭). This setback delayed the publication of my third class, which I adore, on Procreate Brushes Productivity. 🎨However, I chose to leverage this UNsuccess by repurposing my online classes to propose a traditional class for kids here in Switzerland. And guess what? 🥁 It worked! 🥳 Two classes down, two more ongoing, and a long waiting list of eager learners. The joy shared in these classes is indescribable. And now, as a goal for LYA23, I'm thrilled to work on an ARTSY book about 3D pen art, aiming to pitch it starting next January! 📚

2) Overcome Obstacles or make it a signature: Being Italian and now residing in the German-speaking region of Switzerland, my accent was a hurdle. But an empowering chat with the wonderful Liz Kohler Brown helped me see it as a trait. So, I decided: why not make fun of my accent paranoia by teaching online in a Super Mario Suit? YEP! And I did! 🤪 It’s on Skillshare for everyone to see. 👻 The underlying message? Embrace the quirks of my Italian accent and let’s dive into the learning fun of the class! 🇮🇹 Btw, to all the International Artists Friends here: when you need it, remember this quote from Yale law professor Amy Chua: Do you know what a foreign accent is? It's a sign of bravery! 🥰

3) There is Room for us!: Thanks to my husband, I explored ChatGPT early on since the first beta version by invitation. As a multi-passionate artist with a computer science background, it was love at first sight. I crafted a new Skillshare class around it on the 3rd of January 2022, but life threw a curveball delaying its publication (+ the pain from the previous failures😅). To add to the drama, when I was finally ready, a class by Peggy Dean (!!!) was launched THE day I was uploading my finished videos. 😭 (Not a generic teacher, The Peggy Dean!!! and with the same incipit: ChatGPT for creatives!!) It took a week to recover, but I decided to leverage my work (already done) and the value of diverse perspectives. While Peggy’s class soared with over 8000 students, I'm overjoyed with my own band of appreciative learners in my class, and I'm really happy I didn't give up, and I've pushed the publish button anyway! 🦾 🌐

To wrap up this lengthy post😅, the profound lessons of Stacie Bloomfield and in particular "Slow growth is good growth" and "Done is better than perfect" have been guiding stars 🌟 🩷 Thank you Stacie! 🩷

Because I embraced these lessons, today marks a year as an art teacher, and with 5 classes and 527 students along this journey on Skillshare, my heart brims with boundless joy, pride, and gratitude. 🎇

I hope my experience can help some of you to do not give up. To be persistent, resilient, and to continue. Being one of LYA23 community guides was a privilege and an honor, and I can't express how much joy and pride accompanying you on this journey has brought me. We rock LYA fam!

To conclude, I'll now use the words of my own son about art projects:

'It takes time, but it is worth it!' 🩷

Artistic Seasons 2024: A Yearly Guide to Thematic Creativity

Dive into a year of artistic exploration with "Artistic Seasons 2024: A Yearly Guide to Thematic Creativity"! This calendar is my entry for the 2024 Calendar Wall Hangings Design Challenge hosted by Spoonflower.

It invites artists to immerse themselves in a different theme each month, fostering a diverse and vibrant portfolio. Designed to inspire and guide, this calendar is a visual journey through seasonal motifs, cultural celebrations, and diverse artistic styles, helping artists leverage their work and stay ahead of industry trends. Perfect for those looking to build a versatile portfolio and embrace the rhythm of creativity!

The story and muses...

This piece has been a revelation of self-discovery and artistic growth. The inception of this project was born out of a familiar scenario – the race against time, the last-minute rush to complete projects, and the ensuing stress that left little room for pitching or timely uploads on Print on Demand (POD) platforms.

Over the years, I’ve been captivated by the allure of organized artists, marveling at their ability to seamlessly navigate the creative landscape. The insights and valuable lessons gleaned from observing and interacting with these artists have been nothing short of enlightening. Two artists, in particular, Leah Keggi and Mable Tan, have been instrumental in shaping my perspective and approach to artistry.

The decision to create this visual calendar for 2024 was fueled by a desire to amalgamate the wisdom acquired over the years and to provide a tangible guide for artists. The goal is to alleviate the pressures of last-minute project completions and to empower artists with the time and energy to confidently pitch their work and optimize their presence on POD platforms.

It’s a reflection of lessons learned, a tribute to the organized artistry of Leah Keggi and Mable Tan, and most importantly, it’s a step towards a more mindful and proactive approach to creating art.

This piece is now published on Spoonflower (a vote will be more than welcome) and soon may be available digitally.🎨✨

Procreate Dreams: The Next Game-Changer?

Yesterday, Procreate dropped a bombshell with the announcement of their upcoming release, Procreate Dreams, set for this November.

While I have to admit, I was anticipating some productivity enhancements for Procreate itself (oh, how I've longed for a simpler way to sort my brush library or a faster backup process!), this announcement brought a mix of surprise and enthusiasm.

What I Had Hoped For...

Like many artists, I've always looked for tools that would make my workflow smoother and more efficient. A more effective gallery search, a pattern preview, and perhaps, (am I being too ambitious here?) a feature to convert drawings to vectors would have been dreams come true.

What Procreate Delivered...

Contrarily, Procreate's new app development seems like they've read my animation dreams!

My journey with Procreate animations began humbly, with a Giphy account (my yellow giraffe for LYA2022!). Soon after, my passion only grew, and I even conducted a class right here in Switzerland!

The prospect of integrating my animations to customize videos, particularly for my Skillshare classes, always thrilled me. Now, with Procreate Dreams, having such an advanced tool right on the iPad feels surreal! With a user-friendly timeline, the familiar Procreate interface as a starting point, and time-saving filters, it’s as if Procreate peeped into my wishlist and decided to grant every single one!

When:

Available November 22.

Expert Opinions and Insights

I was thrilled to see that some of my favorite artists and teachers, like Lisa Bardot and Brooke Glaser, graced the event. Lisa Bardot has already given us a sneak peek into the app with her insightful content. I also stumbled upon (thanks to Ali of the amazing Creative Journey Community of Jennifer Nichols) an intriguing video that dives deep into the app's interface (check out from minute 6 where they discuss converting layers to tracks – simply mesmerizing!).

Join the Excitement

I’m eagerly compiling a list of my favorite resources on Procreate Dreams for this blog page. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this exciting revelation. And if you stumble upon any other intriguing resources, please let me know!

To animations and beyond with Procreate Dreams! 🎨✨
